LENIO KAKLEA

France/Greece

CREATION

ENCYCLOPÉDIE PRATIQUE, 41 RUE LÉCUYER

«I never had any choreographic ideas but I think while rehearsing Dance is an experience that allows combination of several bodies. It implies routine activities that get us familiar with materials, with different ways of expressing the movement in the world et also allows to invent deviations, short cuts and detours. In the studio, the body complies with exercises, incorporates certain techniques, transforms itself, learns to watch itself, to flee and to disappear. »

From January till September 2017, choreographer Lenio Kaklea met the inhabitants of Aubervilliers in order to gather the information about their habits. During her enquiry, she collected three hundred records concerning the diversity of habits, rituals and professions that are typical for this suburban town of Paris. These accounts take form of six choreographic portraits that combine the body language of her own and of her practitioners. In the film, 41 rue Lécuyer, she shows her studio practice in which she mixes up several intensities and ways of representation: rehearsal, performance, conversation. She suggests to re-read the influence that the enquiry process has on the creative work. The form of a solo that it takes reveals to be an experience of the otherness in which the familiar meets the unknown. For the Festival DañsFabrik, the choreographer accompanied by three performers, proposes in situ version of this play. 41 rue Charles Berthelot, joins her new choreographic project that examines the methods of transmission and migration of gestures with which we construct our society.

Lenio Kaklea was born in Athens in 1985 She is a graduate of the National School of Contemporary Dance of Athens (SSCD), the CNDC of Angers (FAC) and the Master program Experimentation in Arts and Politics (SPEAP), directed by Bruno Latour at SciencesPo, Paris. Since 2009, she has created choreographic pieces such as Matter of Act (2009), Fluctuat nec Mergitur (2010), Arranged by Date (2012), Deux • L (2013) in collaboration with Lucinda Childs, Margin Release (2015) A Hand’s Turn (2017) and Practical encyclopaedia (2018).
